In Bonn, Rudolf Baumann founds his own transport company, which conveys coal and other key raw materials up until the end of the war. Rudolf Baumann also handles the transport for the Wicküler-Pilsener brewery.
After the end of the war, the business is destroyed and Rudolf Baumann has to restart the company again from scratch. Converting old heavy goods vehicles into tipper trucks paves the way to successfully enter the dump truck and bulk shipping market. Rudolf Baumann and his company become a reliable partner for numerous eminent industrial enterprises during the era of reconstruction.
After the passing of Rudolf Baumann, the family business of Rudolf Baumann Spedition GmbH & Co. KG. emerges. His son, Werner Baumann, takes the reins and continues to run the business as the second generation. German long-haul transport via tipper truck and lorry and regulated by concessions becomes increasingly important for the company.
The effects of the “Economic Wonder” also help kick-start the Baumann Spedition company. The vehicle fleet grows to a total of 40 tipper trucks. With the central Bonn premises now insufficient, the company relocates to an urban area in Karlstraße. The company has now established itself as a classic freight-forwarding company, doing business in its own name and with its own tipper trucks.
In the mid-60s, the Bonn company also handles transportation in neighbouring foreign countries. The regional transport company becomes an international freight forwarder, with a steadily growing customer base.
Baumann Logistik showcases its innovation and makes its first foray into outsourcing with its employees for the lignite unloading station of Stadtwerke Bonn. The Baumann Logistik company even delivers to the municipal power station at weekends and public holidays.
Baumann Spedition purchases new premises in Bonn-Buschdorf and the fleet expands further to encompass up to 50 vehicles. The company becomes synonymous with national and international tip-lorry transport. The sons, Helmut and Horst Baumann, then lead the third generation of the company.
Baumann Spedition becomes the dispatch forwarding agent for an established manufacturer of refractory products for nine German production facilities. This marks the next step of the company in its progress towards becoming an international forwarding business. Baumann organises the global dispatch of raw materials to factories, enhances its maritime and inland navigation business in the process and organises port handling on behalf of the company.
Containers have become increasing key to international freight transport, not just as transport boxes. Baumann is well aware of the versatility offered by storage, sea and accommodation containers as modular and mobile building systems. Sea containers are used as storage boxes at their own site. The company also provides container cabins at construction sites and in factories. The lease and sale of containers develops into a key business area.
Baumann starts rendering services to CHEP Deutschland GmbH at the Bonn location. The company gives Baumann responsibility for the service centre of the Rhine-Main area. A new 13,500 m² storage facility is also constructed at the Biebesheim am Rhein site, on Baumann business premises of 31,000 m².
Baumann expands and makes use of a reserve area of its factory premises, at Christian-Lassen-Straße in Bonn. A traffic area of 6,000 m² is newly acquired and a factory and storage hall are purchased to operate a CHEP service centre. Services handled for CHEP: Acceptance, repair and storage of rented pallets and load carriers. The foundations for the company to enter a new business sector are laid.
The portable building systems division also expands further. The company purchases 10,000 m² of land on the site of a former machine factory in Ernst-Robert-Curtius-Straße 3 - 5 in the Buschdorf business park. A factory building of 2000 m² is then constructed and used to accommodate assembly, upkeep and repair operations for portable building systems.
Baumann portable building systems becomes increasingly active in the Rhine-Main area and sets up a new container depot at the Bad Camberg site. Leveraging a model exhibition and qualified staff, this is the hub from which Baumann meets the needs of local companies with its flexible and innovative space systems.
The family business grows still further and constantly expands the scope of its logistics services. Neighbouring premises totalling 15,000 m² are purchased, including a 4,200 m² logistics building. From here, Baumann offers additional individual storage and service options. The new needs-based logistics service centres on a special tyre storage option for major automotive customers within the new halls.
As part of innovative in-house solutions rolled out by Baumann, as well as transport and storage, it leverages a classic outsourcing process to also handle the production of Dernoton sealing material for the Dernbach company.
The Baumann portable building systems department also intensifies its activity at the newly established Boxberg site. This is a particularly vital and necessary step for Baumann, given various container projects and numerous leases of event containers at the Nürburgring. With transport connections in mind, the link to the A1 is also key to securing the future for Baumann at the Boxberg site.
Baumann Spedition and Baumann portable building systems are constantly evolving. The company enhances its customer service still further, by optimising its business premises. Modifying the container workshop and expanding the external areas frees up even greater capacity for modification and handling of containers. More commercial and technical employees are taken on.
Baumann also develops special outsourcing concepts at the ChemPark Leverkusen and creates new jobs in the Rhine region. The main focus here is on in-plant transport of goods in bulk using special tipper trucks and wheel loaders, as well as deploying forklift and road sweeping machines.
Work to renovate and reorganise the operational premises in Bonn is complete. The Bonn-based family company develops its operations for CHEP Deutschland GmbH and extends the operational capacity with a warehouse. Within the redesigned factory building, Baumann decides to deploy new and automated conveyor and robotic technology for inspecting and repairing CHEP load carriers.
Operation range further extended. Storage and service provided by enlarging the warehouse space. Capacity of Bonn warehouse space: Around 6,000 m².
The traditional Bonn-based Rudolf Baumann Spedition GmbH & Co. KG company is renamed Baumann Logistik GmbH & Co. KG. This reflected the wish of the joint managing directors, Helmut and Horst Baumann, to choose a company name reflecting its wider business portfolio having emerged over the years.
Purchase of neighbouring premises directly opposite the large factory building and the existing container storage area. This is then used to construct a modern container office with expanded storage space, to accommodate the portable building systems department.
Completion of the new container office facilities:
Our portable building systems department has reinforced its service delivery and taken on three new employees. All eleven commercial staff man the modern office container facilities built on the new factory premises on Ernst-Robert-Curtius Straße 4 opposite our main Bonn container depot.
